Age 98, of Brecksville OH, formerly of McKees Rocks PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday
January 2nd, 2024 at the MetroHealth Hospital Cleveland Ohio.
Beloved husband of the late Sophie H. (Schuster) Katrenich; loving father of Tom (Cathy)
Katrenich and Barbra (Michael) Persichetti, and the late Stephen Paul Katrenich; cherished
grandfather (Papp Papp) of Thomas, Sara, and Catherine Katrenich. Brother of Helen King, the
late Joseph and John, and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Steve honorably served his country in the US Navy during World War II, recipient of the Purple
Heart medal for serving on the USS Mississinewa AO-59. The USS Mississinewa was exploded
and sank by the KAITEN maned suicide submarine in the western part of the Pacific in 1944.
The book KAITEN tells the story and wartime experiences of the attack and sinking of the USS
Mississinewa.
Steve’s natural mechanical ability started with working in transportation in 1950 for J&L Steel
(LTV Steel) for 38 years. His appreciation for music was legendary and still continues through
his family. He loved to strum the banjo. He believed in lifelong learning, maintained an extensive
library, and attended continuing education courses throughout his life.
Special thank you to the medical staff at the VA Hospitals in Cleveland and Pittsburgh,
MetroHealth Hospital, friends at Chippewa Place Apartments, Holy Ghost and St. Joseph
parishes.
May God grant to his departed servant, Steve, blessed repose and eternal memory. Vičnaja
Pamjat.
Relatives and friends received on Sunday January 7th from 1pm to 3pm at McDERMOTT
FUNERAL HOME, 334 Forest Grove Road (Kennedy Township) 15108. Divine Liturgy of Christian
Burial in Holy Ghost Byzantine Catholic Church, 225 Olivia Street, McKees Rocks, PA 15136 on
Monday January 8th at 10am. Interment to follow in St. Mark Cemetery with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice. Parastas Sunday 3 PM
