Charles Keith Johnston II

Charles "Chuck/CJ" Keith Johnston II passed away unexpectedly at the age of 74 on December 30, 2023. CJ was preceded in death by father, Keith Johnston, mother, Betty Johnston, and sister, Judy Moran. CJ is survived by wife, Winona Johnston of 25 years, son, Zach Johnston, daughter, Whitney Cardenas (Bob Cardenas), grandchildren Jack and Juliana Cardenas, and extended family.  . He received a Bachelor's of Science in Education from Edinboro University and entered the USAF Pilot Training Program after graduation. While on active duty, he also received his MBA from Webster University. In the Air Force, he served in various positions including: Command Pilot, Instructor Pilot, Flight and Squadron Commander, and Wing Level Director of Administration. In all, he spent 24 years in USAF and Air Force Reserves in Pittsburgh and retired Honorably as a Lieutenant Colonel. CJ enjoyed the air so much he also flew for US Airways, where he piloted various commercial aircraft and after 30 years, he retired as a distinguished Captain. In 2012, CJ found an office on the ground. He proudly served as the President of the Pittsburgh Fisher House and was instrumental in its growth for the last eleven years. His devotion to the well-being of the veteran's community will be hard to replace. CJ was an active member of Union Presbyterian Church including serving as a Deacon. In his spare time, he was an avid reader, loved to bowl, and tried to not be the worst golfer in Southwestern PA all while being a "walking jukebox" of all genres of music. He will truly be missed, but we can all take comfort in knowing he has been issued a new set of wings. Until we meet again, fly high CJ. 

Relatives and friends will be received Wednesday, January 10, 2024, from 4-8 PM at McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, 334 Forest Grove Road, Coraopolis (Kennedy Township), PA 15108.  Communal prayer Thursday, January 11, 2024, 10 AM at the funeral home followed by Funeral Service 11 AM at Union U.P. Church, 6165 Steubenville Pike, McKees Rocks (Robinson Township), PA 15136.  Interment in The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies with full military honors.
