Phoebe M. Gary
Born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on September 13, 1934 to Charles Jones and Glycerin Thompson, whom both have preceded her in death. At the age of 5 years old her aunt Ulearmae moved her to McKees Rocks, PA where she also attended school. Phoebe was married to William White and later to Ernest Gary. Phoebe was employed as a social worker by Allegheny County for 11 years. She also worked as a receptionist for Central Blood Bank for 6 years and The Office of Economic Opportunity as a community service worker for 11 years. While living in Hays manor, Phoebe designed and started a lunch program for the L room. It was a program for after school children, that lived in Hays manor. The program offered recreation, tutoring and field trips, which also implemented the use of college students. The Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA did an outreach program for the L Room. Phoebe enjoyed her time volunteering for meals on wheels. Phoebe also ran for Committee Woman and won in her district of McKees Rocks. In her later years she enjoyed her time as a caregiver.
